Below are questions that The Dirty Martinis get asked on a regular basis.
To view each answer, simply click on the appropriate question. If you have any further queries that are not answered here, click here and get in touch.
How much does it cost to book The Dirty Martinis?
Our standard fee is very reasonable for a 5 piece band, and depends upon location. We are based in Fife and Edinburgh and take travel and any extra playing time into account when quoting.
Our standard playing time for weddings is 3 1/2 hours of live music, this can be adjusted for party’s or events. We arrive at venues for 6:30pm to set up and sound check, usual start time 8pm.
Booking the band direct can save you paying a entertainment agent hundreds of pounds in commission, some agents add 20% commission fee on top of bands fee.
Please complete our enquiry form with date and venue location for a free, no obligation quote.
Can you play our first dance?
Not a problem. If the song you would like isn’t one we know already, we’ll always try our best to learn a first dance, or special request for you.
All we ask is that we’re given adequate time to learn the song properly, normally 3 months allows us time to plan to run through in rehearsals.
Can you also play live Ceilidh dances?
No problem. The Dirty Martinis find that two or three Ceilidh dances over the course of your evening is enough in most circumstances.
We call the dances if required by your guests. However, please remember that if you would prefer to exclude ceilidh, this is not a problem – just let us know in advance that it is not required.
How Long Do You Need To Set Up?
The Dirty Martinis need a hour to set up and sound check our stage show, however, if your event has a particularly complicated ‘get-in’ (i.e. flights of stairs etc) please let the band know at the time of booking.
Pack downs after the show generally take around 1 hour, and you can rest assured that The Dirty Martinis will leave the stage and dressing room as clean and tidy as we found it!
Do The Dirty Martinis use backing tracks?
No – We are a fully live five piece band at all times. Everything you hear is generated by the musicians on stage.
This also includes our Scottish Ceilidh dances all played live by the band.
How do I book the band?
First thing is to complete our enquiry form, we always respond to enquiry’s via email.
If we are available for your date and you are happy with our quote we then email you a binding contract with all your booking details.
Our contract includes our banking details and we ask you pay a deposit of £200 by bank transfer. Once received we email a receipt and that’s the band booked.
Final balance can be paid using same bank details, usually the week before your big day or event. This way all payments are dealt with beforehand and we can concentrate on providing excellent entertainment.
Where Can I See The Dirty Martinis Play Before Booking The Band?
The Dirty Martinis play showcase gigs throughout the year in pubs in Edinburgh & Fife. This way you can come along and watch the band in a live setting doing what we do best.
We prefer to do this rather than playing at wedding fairs.
The Silver Kings Gigs page and our band Facebook page can direct you to the upcoming gig listings, please feel free to contact the band for the latest gig details.
What Is The Band's Dress Code?
The Silver Kings always arrive at your venue wearing matching tuxedoes, giving a smart and professional image for your big day or event.
How many breaks do you take? Can you supply background music during the break ?
Normally we will take our break while you guys are having buffet. If we are playing past midnight then we may well take another very short comfort break later in the evening.
Of course we will play background music, this helps to keep the party atmosphere going. We have a playlist of music that we use during our breaks – or if you prefer to give us an iPod/iPhone player with a playlist on it – that’s no problem.
How Long Do You Play For?
We usually play for three and a half hours, usually between 8-12pm which is standard for weddings. However, we are extremely flexible and can negotiate time variations to suit your event. If you want us to play past 12, just ask. We do charge an additional fee.
Will I get the same band I saw at my friend's wedding?
Definitely YES! We play as the same 5-piece band for 99.9% of the time. Unfortunately people do get ill and if this happens then we’ll always replace that person with a top quality musician, who has rehearsed or played with the band before. Be careful, we know there’s a lot of bands out there where this isn’t the case!
How Reliable Are You?
The Silver Kings are EXTREMELY reliable and have never let a client down, we treat The Silver Kings as a business and It goes without saying that under no circumstances would we break our contract with you.
How Loud Do You Play?
Venue permitting, we can play as loudly or as quietly as you like! The Silver Kings have played at many functions and can tailor the volume to the size of the room and number of people. Please remember you are hiring a live band, and we are more than happy to oblige the bride & groom if we are ever asked to turn the volume down. Please check with your venue if they have a sound limiter installed as – in our experience – sometime they tend to be set quite low for a 5 piece band and we may be unable to accept the gig.
Will I Also Need A DJ?
We are happy to play a selection of continuous music that is mixed together before and between our performances. Most clients find that they do not need the expense of hiring a DJ in addition to the band.
Can We Choose Your Playlist?
We have a wide range of songs to suit all ages and preferences, which allows us to adapt our playlist for each occasion to ensure the party keeps going. We have built up good experience of this over the years and hope you will trust us to deliver the appropriate variety on the night.
Do You Have Public Liability Insurance?
Yes, we have public liability insurance up to £10,000,000. Copies are available on request.
My Venue Has A Sound Limiter. Have You Played And Can You Play With One Of These Present?
Yes, we have played in venues where a sound limiter has been installed, and in our experience, they tend to be set quite low for a 5 piece band. Please check with your venue if they have a sound limiter installed and let us know in advance as we may be unable to accept the gig.
Do The Band Provide Their Own Sound & Lighting Equipment?
The Silver Kings have a state of the art sound system, and also provide all of the lighting equipment required including lighting onto the dance floor.
Stage / Floor Space
The band needs an ideal minimum stage or floor space, we will endeavor to fit into smaller areas when this is not available, or odd shaped stages, note that there is a practical limit as to how much room a full drum kit, two guitars, speakers, mic stands and five people can be fitted.
Please also make sure that any DJ or Act you have also booked appreciates the space needed by a 5 piece live band and does not set up centre stage or use an unreasonable percentage of any limited floor space. While the band prefers a raised stage (as will most audiences), it is not a requirement.
We need a minimum of 2 x 13 amp sockets and draw around 20 amps with all lights and PA in use.
